ANYONE WHO ASKS FOR YOUR PASSWORD IS A SCAMMER!
Common Locations tells you where the scam is usually found.
What the scammers say is exactly what it means, if you see anyone saying these things, you should report them.
What REALLY happens explains why this is a scam.
What to do tells you what you should do if you see this scam, or you have fallen for the scam.
Quick ways to tell if someone is a scammer:
-
They ask for your password.
-
They ask you to change your email address.
-
They say they know a way to get neopoints and not do anything.
"I'm From The Neopets Team!"
Common Locations: NeoChat, Neomail, MSN, Yahoo, AIM, etc
What the scammers say: "I'm from the Neopets Team! If you don't give me your password/(rare item here)/change your email to (email here), I will freeze your account!" OR "I'm from the Neopets Team and I have been told you have been spamming/scamming/other wrong doing and you will be frozen unless you give me your password/(rare item here)/change your email to (email here)." OR
"I'm from the Neopets Team and you have won a contest! You will get your item after sending me your password/(rare item here)/change your email to (email here)."
What REALLY happens: If you send them your password, they will steal your account and items. If you need to change your email address, you will also get your account stolen, since now they can get your password. If you send them an item, you won't get anything in return, you are just being taken advantage of.
What to do: If you have sent them this info, quickly change your password here, change your email address back to normal, and block the person here. If you have their Neopets Username, report them here.
"Low prices for rare items!"
Common Locations: User Shops, NeoChat, Shop Wizard
What the scammers say: "I have (rare item here) in my shop for only 1 neopoint/other cheap price!"
What REALLY happens: If you click on the item to buy it, a few things might happen. One: You will be taken to a log-in page and the item is not real. This is a page set up by the owner of the shop and if you enter your username and password your account will be stolen. If you do not find a fake log in page, you might have actually bought the item, but for higher than you thought. The shop owner might have put the item in the shop for 100 neopoints and you click on it, but while you are buying it, they will change the price to 10000, much more than you should have paid!
What to do: If you entered your password in the log in page, quickly change it here and report their shop by clicking on the link at the top of the page that says "Click here to report the shop". If you bought the item for a high price, there isn't much you can do. You can try reporting them here, but they may not get frozen.
"I'm a Neo-Sitter!"
Common Locations: NeoChat, Neomail
What the scammers say: "I will neosit your pets while you are away on vacation. Send me your password and I will log in to your account every day and feed and play with your pets!"
What REALLY happens: As soon as you give them your password, they will go in to your account and steal your account and items. If you are going away, then put your pets in the NeoLodge. If you don't want to pay money, that's fine, you can leave your pets until you get back, they won't die, though they may be a little unhappy.
What to do: If you have sent them your password, quickly change it here. If you have their Neopets Username, report them here and block them here.
"Get a Million Neopoints For Free!" / "Neopoint Generator!"
Common Locations: NeoChat, Neomail
What the scammers say: "I found this really cool site that gives you neopoints for free! Just go to the site, enter your username, password, the amount of neopoints you want, and the items you want! (link here)"
What REALLY happens: If you send enter your password, they will steal your account and items. There is NO site or program to get neopoints for free, and if there is one, then it is against the rules, and using it will get your frozen.
What to do: Quickly change your password here. If you have their Neopets Username, report them here and block them here.
"You Have Won A Contest!"
Common Locations: NeoChat, Neomail
What the scammers say: "You have won a contest! To receive your prize, you must send me the following information: Username, Password (S-P-A-C-E I-T O-U-T), Email, (etc...)" OR "You have won a contest! To receive your prize, you must change your email address to: (email address here)."
What REALLY happens: If you send them your password, they will steal your account and items. If you need to change your email address, you will also get your account stolen, since now they can get your password.
What to do: Quickly change your password here. If you have their Neopets Username, report them here and block them here.
Note: If you win a Better Than You, Lenny Condrum, or Mystery Picture contest, you will get a neomail, but it won't tell you to change anything or reply.
"Right click on items in my shop!"
Common Locations: User Shops
What the scammers say: "Right click on an item in my shop and ignore the message that comes up and hold enter for ten seconds. Then, a (rare item here) will be added to your inventory!"
What REALLY happens: If you do this, you will be actually buying these items. Usually, they will tell you to right click on a useless/extremely cheap item that is price very high, so you will be getting ripped off, and you will not get any items.
What to do: Report their shop by clicking on the link at the top of the page that says "Click here to report the shop".
Below are not exactly scams, but ways people will cheat you out of money! Also watch out for these!
"Starberry Turns Your Pet Starry!"/"Rainbowberry Turns Your Pet Rainbow!"
Common Locations: Trading Post
There are NO items that can paint your pet, such as the Starberry, other than Paint Brushes!
Whoops?: There isn't much you can do if you've already bid and it's been accepted. If the bid has NOT been accepted yet, withdraw immediately.
"Essence of Everlasting Apple + Apple = Everlasting Apple!"
Common Locations: Trading Post
Some people say that if you mix these items at the cooking pot you will get a very rare item, the Everlasting Apple. This is NOT true, so don't believe them.
Whoops?: There isn't much you can do if you've already bid and it's been accepted. If the bid has NOT been accepted yet, withdraw immediately.
"Roll the Miniature Dice to win 250k!"
"Whoever Bids Highest on the Toy Sailboat Wins a (Rare Item)!"
Common Locations: Trading Post
DO NOT bid on these items! The person might have a Baby Paint Brush, but it most cases, even if they did, they would not give it to you. If you really want a Baby Paint Brush, you should bid on one, and not on a Pile of Dung or Sailboat owned by a scammer.
Whoops?: There isn't much you can do if you've already bid and it's been accepted. If the bid has NOT been accepted yet, withdraw immediately.
"Buy the most from my shop and win!"
Common Locations: User Shops
Shop Contests are NOT allowed. Report the shop and leave. DO NOT buy the items. Some shop contests are run by people who will actually give you the item they say they will, but most times, they won't and they're cheating you out of your money.
Whoops?: There is nothing you can do if you have already bought the items. Just report the shop to keep other people from making the same mistake.
"It's my sister's birthday, and I want to get her something special..."
Common Locations: Neoboards
They'll say something about a sister, cousin, friend, or any other relation who are having there birthday today, sometimes they'll even be sick and dying in the hospital and their last wish was for a Baby Paint Brush... in some cases, this may be true, but very, very, very, rarely. Almost every single time, they are just looking for freebies.
Whoops?: There isn't anything you can do if you've already sent them something. You can try asking for it back politely, you can say that it was your brother/sister/whoever's item and you didn't mean to send it to them, but they probably won't give it back.
"Cheap items in shops"
Common Locations: User Shops
You may see a item for cheap in a user's shop, for example, a Bottled Fire Faerie for 700 neopoints. You go and quickly buy it but find that instead you have spent 7000 neopoints, way more than it's worth! The scammer will change the price while you are buying it. A way to avoid this happening would be to only carry around the amount of neopoints you are going to spend, and always double check the price in the pop up ("Are you sure you wish to buy item at # NP?") and make sure it says the price you want to pay.
Whoops?: There isn't anything you can do if you've already bought it. You can try to report the shop, but unless they keep on doing it, the Neopets Team won't be able to see what you were reporting.
"Trading without the post" / "Borrowing"
Common Locations: Neoboards
If someone asks you to trade an item by just sending it from your inventory, do not trust them. They can easily get you to send them the item and not give you anything in return. Don't offer to let anyone borrow your items either, you probably won't get them back ever, even if they say they'll pay you double the price (this often happens when someone is on a Illusen or Jhudora's quest). True, some people will give you the item back, but to be on the safe side, only trade by using the Trading Post on Mystery Island.
Whoops?: There isn't anything you can do if you've already sent the item. Neopets will not give you back the item as far as I know, and I don't think you can get them frozen.
Avoiding Scams/Scammers
-
Don't brag about how many neopoints you have or the items you have.
-
Don't post your username everywhere, especially if you are rich, try to keep a low profile.
-
Try to stay away from the Neoboards. You can still post there, but just be careful when posting, once again, keep a low profile.
-
Have a different password to your Neopets account than any passwords anywhere else. If someone can get into another account of yours, say a Hotmail, AIM, etc, then they might be able to get into your Neopets account. If you use the password (for example) "dog" to get into your Hotmail account, someone in your Hotmail account will probably try the word "dog" to get into your Neopets account.
-
Don't share an account with anyone - not even your best friend in real life. The only people who you could trust completely would be a person in your family, they will always be your family and if a brother or sister steals the account, you can probably get it back by telling a parent. You might have a fight with your friend and never talk again, then they might steal the account. But especially don't share with someone you have never met.
